12-year-old girl killed in Montana massacre was ‘hero’ who called 911 trying to save her family

Charlotte Ghekiere, 12, raised the alarm Sunday evening when Alan Smith -- her stepmom's "hermit" brother -- opened fire on his family that had gathered at the Billings home for dinner.

Charlotte Ghekiere, 12, is hailed as a hero for calling 911 during a shooting that killed eight family members in Montana.

The victims represented four generations of the blended family, ranging from a great-grandmother in her 90s who used a wheelchair to a 7-year-old girl, a neighbor said.

Police said they responded to the home on Sunday evening and heard gunshots coming from out back, just before the house was completely engulfed in flames.
