What happened to Shane McClanahan? Why Rays placed All-Star pitcher on IL
The Tampa Bay Rays will be without one of their top starting pitchers for at least a week. Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander announced on an appearance on WDAE radio with Tom Krasniqi that left-hander Shane McClanahan was placed on the 15-day injured list with lower back tightness. The two-time All-Star exited yesterday's start after just three innings due to the back pain. "The team is hopeful that he’ll only miss two starts, Neander tells Krasniqi. Exact timing hinges on how he feels over the next week-plus, of course, but it’s notable that the team doesn’t currently think the issue will keep McClanahan sidelined for long," Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors wrote.
