What are dry thunderstorms and why are they common in Portugal?

A thunderstorm without rain may sound impossible, but in Portugal’s hot summer months it can happen more often than people realise. These are known as dry thunderstorms, and while they may pass quickly, they can bring one of the country’s most serious seasonal risks: lightning without enough rain to wet the ground.
