The Ukrainian Cossack Who Gave Us Vienna Coffee
Yuriy Kulchytsky, a native of western Ukraine who fought with the Cossacks, was one of the most extraordinary figures of the 17th century. During the siege of Vienna in 1683, he volunteered for a dangerous mission: dressed as a Turk, he walked through the enemy camp and delivered an important message to the allied troops. Not only did his feat save Europe, but it also led to Vienna’s first coffee house.
