Taiwan, US not chip competitors, US researcher says

Staff writer, with CNA A US academic has rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that Taiwan “took” the US’ chip industry, saying that Taiwan and the US are strategic partners rather than competitors in semiconductors. Stimson Center senior fellow Michael Cunningham wrote in an e-mail that “Taiwan didn’t take America’s chip business.” Instead, US companies remain leaders in semiconductor design while outsourcing manufacturing to Taiwanese firms, he added.
