Some 6.6 million Italians are living abroad says Istat

At the end of 2025 some 6.6 million Italian nationals were residing abroad, approximately 183,000 more than at the beginning of last year, according to a preliminary estimate released by Istat on Thursday. The national statistics agency said the number of Italians residing abroad rose by 2.8% last year, down from an increase of 4.6% in 2024. Over half of Italians who are abroad, 53.1%, live in Europe, while more than a third, 34.3%, reside in Central or South America. Istat said that 347,000 Italian pensioners were living abroad at the end of 2024. Many of the Italian living abroad are also citizens of other countries.
