Sam Webb retires from NFL at 28 — three days after signing with Giants

Farewell, Sam Webb. We hardly knew ye. The Giants placed the 28-year-old cornerback on the reserve/retired list Sunday, three days after they signed him and a day after he played in the team’s first preseason game against the Vikings. Webb, who joined the Giants five days after he was cut by the Broncos to end a nine-day stint in Denver, had two tackles in the 13-10 loss to Minnesota at MetLife Stadium. He appeared in seven games for the Browns last season after they claimed him off the Titans’ practice squad on Nov. 19. His most memorable moment came during the Browns’ 20-18 win over the Bengals in their final game of the season, when he recovered a fumble and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, giving Cleveland a 14-6 lead.
