Rota and Guam Wrecked By Catastrophic Typhoon
July 06, 2026 2:24 PM ET Super Typhoon Bavi made landfall on the U.S. territory of Rota with sustained winds of 180 mph, causing flooding and prolonged power outages. Rota is part of the Northern Mariana Islands, about 50 miles north of Guam, and has a population of around 2,000. The super typhoon — equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane — made landfall early on July 6 local time.The National Weather Service Guam (NWS Guam) told Rota residents to take shelter immediately. “An extreme wind warning is in effect for Rota MP until 9:15 a.m. ChST for extremely dangerous hurricane winds.
