REVIEW: 'Blue Velvet'

"I don't know if you're a detective or a pervert," says Sandy Williams, an innocent blonde high schooler, to Jeffrey Beaumont, her handsome suitor and unlikely partner in crime, at the outset of the small-town mystery Blue Velvet (1986). Of the theatergoers who paid to watch it, director David Lynch, the maverick behind Eraserhead (1977) and Dune (1984), wondered the same.
