Post-mortem examination after body found in burning car in Waitomo

A post-mortem examination is being carried out by police after a body was found in a car on fire in the Waitomo district.Police are treating the death as "unexplained".Emergency services were called to a car on fire on Mokauiti Road at 6am on Sunday.Upon arrival, a person was found dead in the vehicle.Area investigations manager, detective senior sergeant Ian Foster said formal identification was underway and a post-mortem was expected to take place on Tuesday.Cordons were in place on Mokauiti Road, between Waitahi Road and Oniao Road, which were reopened at 8.30pm on Sunday.Foster said enquiries into the fire and death were ongoing.
