NT$150 million scam under investigation

By Chiu Chun-fu and Jonathan Chin / Staff reporter, with staff writer Add TT as Preferred Source The Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office has launched an investigation into a foreign-based group that allegedly defrauded a woman of more than NT$150 million (more than US$4.6 million) in a weight-loss drug scheme, a source said yesterday.Speaking on condition of anonymity, an official of the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) said that scammers used a weight-loss drug advertisement on Facebook to lure the victim — whose name is withheld to protect her privacy — into buying their product.The victim made multiple transactions on the Line app and received a box of the purported medicine after each payment, all the while believing that the drugs were working, the official said.
