In August 2023 police were called after the one-year-old had been taken to hospital, where despite medical staff’s best efforts he died. A second child was also found to be ‘neglected and underdeveloped’. Merseyside Police said a Home Office postmortem examination confirmed Maero died of ketonic hypoglycaemia and severe malnutrition.
