Mets have $223.2 million problem for 2027 MLB season

The New York Mets came into the season as World Series hopefuls. However, things haven't gone their way, and the postseason is not a realistic goal with just one month left in the season. A major reason for that is the poor play from some of New York's highest-paid players. Injuries also play a role. And while owner Steve Cohen can flash his money to improve the roster, the Mets owe a large sum of money to players who haven't performed in 2026. "On a related note, if Bo Bichette doesn't opt out of his contract, the Mets are going to owe a combined $223.1M next season to eight players who have been worth a combined 1.5 bWAR this year," Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller wrote Wednesday. Bichette, Marcus Semien, and Jorge Polanco did not have productive first years in Queens. Polanco is out for
