A WOMAN HAS been found dead following an assault at a house in Co Laois this afternoon. Gardaí and emergency services were called to a domestic residence on Church Street in Portlaoise shortly after 12.30pm today. The woman, aged in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. A postmortem examination will be carried out in due course, gardaí said. A man in his 70s was arrested at the scene and is being detained at a garda station in the region. Gardaí remain at the scene of the fatal assault. A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the inquiry, while an incident room has been established at Portlaoise Garda Station. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come for
