Major step forward for restoration of Everton's 'jewel on the hill'

Everton Library has stood derelict for almost 30 years13:23, 14 Aug 2026The next major step is being taken to restore a grade II listed historic library in the north of Liverpool once known as the “jewel on the hill.” Specialist contractors are being appointed to assess the condition of Everton Library to develop a programme of repairs to secure its long-term future.‌The site has played an important part in the city’s history as one of its first public libraries. First opening its doors in 1896, the building was designed by architect Thomas Shelmerdine and became a hub for the community.‌Since it closed over two decades ago, the library has fallen into a state of disrepair.
