LETTER: Common sense on the national debt

Kent Davidson Las Vegas August 23, 2026 - 9:00 pm With the national debt reaching an astronomical $40 trillion, it is incumbent on us voters to demand that our elected officials stop talking about spending initiatives and start talking about fiscal sanity. We must balance the budget; cut back on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid; raise taxes on all; and improve conditions to increase economic growth. No one likes it. We all want to get more. But just like any family that is buried in debt, you need to cut spending and earn more money. It is painful and takes a long time, but we no longer can afford that brand new SUV. Time to stop this insane spending by clueless politicians and demand common sense. Which, unfortunately, is no longer common.
