An earthquake hit off the coast of Sanriku, east of the country, at a depth of 10km. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the tremor had a magnitude of 6.1, while the US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the tremor's magnitude at 5.6.No immediate tsunami threat was recorded.
