Italy had only 355,000 births in 2025, record low for post-War period

Only 355,000 children were born in Italy in 2025, a new record low for the post-World War II period, according to a report released on Tuesday by the Fondazione per la Natalità (Foundation for Births) in collaboration with national statistics agency ISTAT. The report added that Italy's fertility rate fell to 1.14 children per woman last year. It added that 62.2% of people who say they are not going to have any more children than they have at the moment linked the decision to "economic, work-related, or social obstacles".
