I compared 5 supermarket pasta sauces — a 69p jar beat Dolmio
This supermarket surprised me yet again.Jennifer Pinto10:30, 11 Jul 2026A good tomato pasta sauce is a kitchen staple all year round, whether you're making a quick bowl of pasta, a hearty bolognese or a homemade pizza. But with prices ranging from less than 50p to more than £2.50 a jar, is it really a case of 'you get what you pay for'?‌To find out, I compared six supermarket tomato pasta sauces from M&S, Sainsbury's, Lidl, Aldi, and Co-Op, in addition to household favourite Dolmio. I judged each one on five key criteria: taste, seasoning, texture, appearance and value for money. I was surprised by just how different each jar was. Some were overly sweet, others lacked a rich tomato flavour, while one budget buy completely exceeded my expectations.‌Sainsbury's Stamford Street Co. Pasta Sauc
