Government response too little, too late: opposition
By Lin Hsin-han, Chen Chih-cheng and Esme Yeh / Staff reporters, with staff writer Opposition parties yesterday questioned the government’s response after a carcinogenic compound was found in cooking oil products.The Food and Drug Administration expanded its recall order late on Saturday over soybean oil produced by Taichung-based Central Union Oil Corp (中聯), which was found to contain excessive levels of the carcinogen benzopyrene.In response to media queries yesterday, President William Lai (賴清德) said that production should be suspended when necessary, products should be recalled or pre-emptively removed from shelves where warranted, and those responsible should be held fully accountable without leniency.
