Cubs sign ex-Orioles, Giants veteran catcher with .378 OPS

The Chicago Cubs are preparing for the final stretch of the regular season. It never hurts to have a plethora of catching depth. The NL Central club added a veteran backstop to the roster on Tuesday. According to Jason Kempf, the Cubs have signed Austin Wynns to a minor league contract. He will report to Triple-A Iowa. "Many have believed the Cubs would be adding a veteran catcher late this season as insurance for the big league club," Kempf wrote on X. "Austin Wynns is joining the @IowaCubs today and fits that bill. Parts of eight years in MLB, including stints this season with the A's, Braves, and Rangers." Wynns will provide depth behind Carson Kelly and Miguel Amaya. The 35-year-old has already played for three clubs in 2026: the Athletics, Atlanta Braves, and Texas Rangers. MORE: Dodg
