Contractor dies in Mohammadpur building fire likely sparked by mosquito coil

A contractor died in a fire that broke out at a flat in Dhaka's Mohammadpur early today.The victim, Newaz Chowdhury Mitu, was from Mojompur area of Kushtia, said police.The fire broke out on the seventh floor of a seven-storey building in Chandrima Model Town around 3:00am, said Anwarul Islam, of the Fire Service and Civil Defence media cell.Two firefighting units rushed to the scene and recovered Newaz's body from a bathroom, he said.Abdul Halim, officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station, said Newaz and his wife were in the flat when the fire broke out.Quoting his wife, the OC said Newaz had been working on his computer while a mosquito coil was burning in the room.
