‘Come to Ireland’ – On This Day in 1926

THE tourist organisations of the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland have both promised support to a new movement with the invitation “Come to Britain” as its slogan.We have not seen any posters about the streets of Belfast inviting us to “Come to the Free State”; nor have we heard of any appeals to the holiday-makers of the Free State to “Come to Northern Ireland”. Strangers are invited to both, but neighbours to neither.It is a pity. Perhaps the day will come when this curious hair-pin bend of our Irish tourist traffic will be straightened out.It might seem to any of our foreign visitors a fairly ordinary proposition that we should exhaust the possibilities of our own island exchange of tourists before looking farther afield.They are always surprised and bewildered when they find the I
