Blue Jays add ex-Padres knuckleballer to roster before Cubs game
The Toronto Blue Jays have added the only active knuckleballer in the Majors to their active roster. Toronto is playing a single game against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday afternoon at Wrigley Field, following a previously postponed matchup on June 21. On Wednesday, the AL East club announced that right-hander Matt Waldron was claimed off waivers from the San Diego Padres. Waldron, 29, can make starts or pitch in long relief with the Blue Jays. He will likely come out of the bullpen. Currently, the Blue Jays' rotation consists of Jose Soriano, Shane Bieber, Dylan Cease, Max Scherzer, and Jameson Taillon. Waldron made 26 starts in 27 appearances with the Padres in 2024, posting a 4.91 ERA with 133 strikeouts in a career-high 146.2 innings. MORE: Tigers receive lousy grade for Tarik Skubal tr
