Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan urge Catholic women to join Belfast peace rally - On This Day in 1976
August 18 1976The organisers of the peace campaign in West Belfast – Mrs Betty Williams and Miss Mairead Corrigan – last night appealed to Catholic women in the city and throughout the North to throw their full support behind the rally for peace in Ormeau Park on Saturday.And already the West Belfast campaigners have been inundated with queries and telephone calls about the rally which is being organised by Protestant women.“Both Mairead Corrigan and I are convinced that the Ormeau Park rally will be even bigger than last Saturday’s at Finaghy Road North. Women from all sections of our community must be there”, Mrs Williams said.“This rally is the effort of the women of the Protestant community and we must show them that we are standing shoulder to shoulder in our efforts to get peace.“We
