Aston's amateur inventor who took to the skies 30 years before Birmingham Airport opened
Alfred P Maxfield, a motor engineer from Victoria Road in Aston, reportedly climbed to 50 feet in his homemade flying machine at Castle Bromwich in 1909 — three decades before Elmdon Airport officially opened its doors to Birmingham.
